AM and PM Explained for Kids: Noon, Midnight & 24-Hour Day

Because an analogue clock only has numbers 1 through 12, its hands make two complete circles every single day. That means 7:00 happens twice a day—once when waking up, and once around dinner or bedtime! AM and PM tell us which half of the day we are in.

What do AM and PM stand for?

AM and PM come from Latin words that describe the position of the sun relative to the midday line (meridian):

The 24-hour day divided in two halves

A full day is 24 hours long, divided into two equal 12-hour halves:

  1. The AM Half (Midnight to Noon): Runs from 12:00 midnight through the night and morning until 11:59 AM. Breakfast, getting dressed, and morning school happen in AM.
  2. The PM Half (Noon to Midnight): Runs from 12:00 noon through the afternoon and evening until 11:59 PM. Lunch, afternoon play, dinner, and bedtime happen in PM.

The mystery of the two twelves: noon vs midnight

Children frequently ask: Is 12:00 noon AM or PM? And what about midnight?

A common myth: "AM means daytime, PM means nighttime"

Be careful not to teach that AM always means sunlight! At 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM, it is pitch black outside, yet it is officially AM because it is after midnight. Help your child connect times to real daily events rather than just sunlight.
