Telling Time Curriculum by Grade: Preschool to 3rd Grade
Telling time is a progression that develops over several school years. Understanding what is expected at each grade level helps parents and teachers provide age-appropriate activities without rushing.
Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten (Ages 3–5)
Primary Focus: Sequence of events and time vocabulary.
- Understand words like yesterday, today, tomorrow, morning, afternoon, night.
- Recognize that clocks and watches tell us what time it is.
- Identify numerals 1 through 12.
- Best activity: Daily visual routine charts with clock pictures showing morning wake-up and bedtime.
Kindergarten (Ages 5–6)
Primary Focus: Clock parts and whole hours (o’clock).
- Identify the difference between the short hour hand and long minute hand.
- Understand that the minute hand at 12 means “o’clock”.
- Tell time to the hour on an analogue clock (e.g., 2:00, 5:00, 8:00).
- Match analogue whole hours to digital displays.
- Best activity: Lesson 1 & Lesson 2 on Clock Learner (“Meet the hands” & “Whole hours”).
1st Grade (Ages 6–7)
Primary Focus: Hours and half-hours.
- Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analogue and digital clocks.
- Understand that “half past” means 30 minutes past the hour.
- Notice that the hour hand sits halfway between two numbers at :30.

2nd Grade (Ages 7–8)
Primary Focus: Five-minute intervals, quarter hours, and AM/PM.
- Tell and write time to the nearest 5 minutes.
- Understand concepts of quarter past (:15) and quarter to (:45).
- Distinguish between AM (morning) and PM (afternoon/evening).
- Recognize that 60 minutes = 1 hour, and 24 hours = 1 day.

3rd Grade (Ages 8–9)
Primary Focus: Exact minutes and elapsed time.
- Tell and write time to the nearest minute.
- Measure time intervals in minutes (elapsed time word problems).
- Solve addition and subtraction problems involving time intervals.
- Common Core Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1.
